It’s that time of year again! Time for ghosts, goblins, and all manner of ghouls to come out of hiding and attempt to scare us! It can be a lot of fun to watch scary movies, or go through a haunted house, but the older you get, the more you realize that real life is more frightening than any made-up horror story.A patient recently forwarded a news story about an aspiring model from the Philippians that can only find work as a Halloween character after getting a bargain priced nose job. All the young man wanted was a more Western-looking nose, but a short time after the surgery he developed an infection and went to see a doctor. He ended up needing multiple emergency surgeries because the doctor discovered his nose had been injected with a toxic combination of wax, petroleum jelly and sealant. The charlatan who had taken advantage of this poor young man ruined not just his looks, but his livelihood and his health.Cheap nose jobs done by butchers masquerading as plastic surgeons are becoming increasingly common as plastic surgery becomes more mainstream. People forget that rhinoplasty is a surgery, and must be treated with just as much care as any other serious medical procedure. Instead, they shop around for the cheapest option, and often end up with tragic results. The horrible things that happen to these patients are a good reminder that the old adage “If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is” is still solid advice. If the outcomes or prices a surgeon is promising sound too good to be true, they probably are. Don’t put your health or your looks at risk just because you think you might be able to save a little money. Chances are you will end up paying for your decision for a long time in the future. When it comes time to pick a doctor to do your nose job, cost should be just one consideration. You should also pay attention to a doctor’s credentials and experience, and ask to see examples of past results.
